Wildcats fall to Monmouth-Roseville

The Wildcats saw their 10-0 lead slip away in the fourth quarter and their season come to an end Saturday, losing to Monmouth-Roseville in the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs.

Wilmington gave up two touchdowns in the final periods after hold the hosts scoreless through three quarters.

The death-blow came with just 1:45 left when Monmouth-R quarterback Addison Fletcher through a quick pass to Jamonny Skinner who broke for a 90-yard touchdown completion. The 'Cats had one last try at it but couldn't gain a first down, Monmouth took a knee and the 'Cats were done with a 6-4 season record.

The two bright spots for the 'Cats were a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter by Allan Richards and in the third, a 71-yard TD run by Sam Hafner. Wilmington threatened just before the half, starting first and goal from the 6 but got as close as the the one-yard-line before turning the ball over on downs.

Wilmington out-ran Monmouth-R 287 yards to 112, led by Hafner who gained 162 yards in 13 attempts. Conner Dempsay finished with 106 yards in 27 tries.

Monmouth, who fumbled the ball away twice, had 157 yards in the air on 8-of-12 passing.

Monmouth-R (8-2) goes on to play Eureka (9-1) who won 54-6 over Chicago (Englewood/Urban Prep).
