There are 11 railroad crossings located within the village of Coal City and everyday, dozens of commercial vehicles are required by law to stop and check for oncoming traffic, even though a few of those lines haven’t seen a locomotive pass through in a decade or more.
For a community that sees its fair share of freight trains passing through on a daily basis, news that the state’s department of transportation would like to see three of those crossings be declared exempt is seen as a sign of progress, and for at least a few town officials, well overdue.
